Dear Friends,

Yesterday on TV I watched the heart-warming story of the Haitian orphaned children coming to my hometown of Pittsburgh. One of the two young women (sisters) who cared for the children was being interviewed by the media. When asked how she managed to do it, she calmly replied that she could not have done anything else but make sure that every one of “her kids” was safe after the recent earthquake. The thought of leaving one of the children from the group behind in the ravaged land was unthinkable to her.

How many of us have been moved and deeply inspired by the undeniable courage, grace and compassion of this story which radiates the most basic of all human needs- to be loved? I believe it teaches us that in the midst of tragedy and suffering, opportunity is humbly offered to us for the awakening of our fundamental nature of goodness.

How do we “work off” karma?

Karma refers to unbalanced energy that we have- in one way or another- created in this lifetime or another. It is neither good nor bad; it is neutral. When we live in the physical world, we perceive it as pleasant or bad depending upon what we are experiencing in a given situation. The truth is that we are simply correcting an energetic imbalance we have previously created. It may or may not involve other people, but it always affects our perception of ourselves as divine beings. Karma is an innate check and balance system that helps us to realize our true identity as Spirit (another word for the Divine.) Therefore even “bad” karma is “good” in that it is a teaching vehicle for us to remove layers of illusion which our personalities- extensions of our egos- have expressed.

There are many ways we can heal ourselves. The first thing on the list is becoming aware of our full responsibility for our thoughts and actions. We must release the mindset of being a victim or martyr. The creation of our lives is a direct result of every thought, word and action we have chosen. We invest moment by moment in our karmic bank account and reap the rewards through either suffering (choices made from our egoic selves) or through peace (choices made through unity with our higher, divine essence.)

Another way to heal karma is by living in love, respect and appreciation of our lives and the lives of others. Performing service work for good causes also erases “negative” balances on our karmic account.

Because of free will, we determine the choice. But the universal law of karma, much like gravity, is always operating, even if we are not aware of it. What we put out, we get back. There are no exceptions or short-cuts. The good news is that by maintaining spiritual awareness through meditation and prayer, we allow intuition to guide us in our healing journey.

Free Will and the Creation of Your Future

“What do you see happening in the future with the relationship I’m in?” Lynn, 48, asked me during a recent session. I’ve been asked this question hundreds of times over the years. The only difference is the subject matter. In fact, questions beginning with the phrase “What will happen in the future with…” are by far the most common ones I hear when people come for readings. It seems we all want to know what the famous Fickle Finger of Fate has in store for us. Whether it’s relationships, work, money or health, we have somehow internalized the impression that our free will has nothing to do with determining the journey or outcome that awaits us in the enigmatic future. Unlike well-known psychics on national TV who supply pat answers to these types of questions, I feel a responsibility to let people know that they have a direct hand in what the future holds for them. “When will my finances improve?” is proportional to how much healing energy you give to that situation, as opposed to waiting for a magical wand from the heavens to wave over your finances.

Since the beginning of creation, we, as divine beings, have possessed free will. It is free because we have choice in the determination of how we will use our vital life energy. The freedom of our will depends largely upon the ability of our minds to make discriminating choices in where and how we will direct our thoughts and therefore, our energy. So, even when outside circumstances seem to control us- such as illness or the loss of a job- we retain the ability to choose how we will react to those factors. Will we respond with fear or strength? Do we see ourselves as victims or do we welcome the opportunity to change through challenges? In relationships, do we recognize what the other person is mirroring to us about ourselves or do we choose to cast the shadow of blame in denial?

In the case of Lynn, I wanted her to be aware of what I felt when I tuned into her feelings: an unhealed, deep-seated issue regarding trust from past relationships in which she had been betrayed. Due to this unresolved pain, Lynn had built an energetic wall around her heart to avoid being hurt again. The wall was thick and protective; it functioned beautifully to keep her safe. But it also disallowed her from giving and receiving love openly and honestly. When I relayed what I was feeling to her, Lynne reacted with amazement that I would know exactly how she felt. She tearfully admitted that

she had felt that way- even as a child- but the problem had worsened significantly as a result of the abandonment she suffered in love relationships. She added that she had significant anxiety over trusting that her current boyfriend loved her as he said he did. In addition, she was unable to trust anyone at her workplace for reasons she could not explain. Unfortunately, Lynn’s lack of trust had manifested itself numerous times in her life because it was part of her core beliefs. The universe gave her what she believed to be true again and again- that no one can be trusted.

I explained to her that the future of her current relationship depended on her being able to heal the lack of trust she felt. We discussed ways she could do that through prior incarnation assessments, energetic healings, meditations and affirmations. Lynn could rewrite her life script if she so desired. And as a result, she would dramatically improve the quality of her relationship and strengthen its chances for long-term survival. I pointed out that what she did today, as far as healing was concerned, would change the journey she was on tomorrow. She could choose to do that or not, but I gave her relationship a much lower chance of happiness if she chose to stay in her current fear-based mindset.

As you can see, questions about the future are not adequately addressed with a simple, one-word answer. We must look inside ourselves to see what choices we are making (or have made) that affect the quality of our future. Awakening to our own power is the most beautiful and magnificent journey we will ever take. And that is where all the difference lies in the creation of our lives.

Nothing real can be threatened.

Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the peace of God.
